KULTUM

Center for contemporary art and religion

KULTUM is an interdisciplinary space for contemporary art forms, focussing on the visual arts, literature, new music and young audiences. The KULTUM Museum shows contemporary art with a special focus on religion, spirituality and existential issues. The rooms of the historic Minorite monastery in Graz, which were newly adapted between 2010 and 2025, show themed, solo and group exhibitions. These are based both on the museum's own collection and on collaborations with international partners.

Curator Johannes Rauchenberger has headed the KULTUM in the Minorite Monastery since 2000 and is intensively involved with various aspects of religion in contemporary art. Based on this, he has been building a collection since 2010 that currently comprises over 700 works.

Maaria Wirkkala: NUN MEHR – MEANTIME

The exhibition “NUN MEHR - MEANTIME” by Finnish artist Maaria Wirkkala at KULTUM in Graz offers a profound insight into her site-specific work. Wirkkala, who has been represented several times at the Venice Biennale, works with installations that transform space and reflect existential themes such as time, memory and spirituality. The exhibition presents works from the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere as well as works on loan from the artist herself. Curated by Johannes Rauchenberger, the show fits in with the KULTUM's concept of a “museum in time”, which deals with religion and art in the 21st century. Wirkkala's works, which have already been shown in previous KULTUM exhibitions, are in dialog with the historical space of the former Minorite monastery and invite visitors to reflect on the connection between art, space and transcendence.
