Into the wide

For the first time, TOMAK and Ines Valentinitsch explore the time-honored genre of landscape painting. New paintings brimming with power and tension meet the imaginative sculptures of Michael Kienzer and Hans Kupelwieser. Together, they invite viewers to embark on a journey into the landscape.

  • Artists:
  • TOMAK
  • TOMAK is an anti-artist, the poster boy of anti-art, who opposes conformity, uniformity, and the “polished,” as he calls it. Whether as Tomaque Deville or PHANTÔMAK, his name says it all, and his name is a nom de guerre. His diction is that of the categorical imperative, his demeanor one of calculated provocation, his manifesto one of rebellion against everyone and everything. TOMAK’s view of humanity, society, and the environment is a penetrating one, one that cuts to the core, analyzing, dissecting, and exposing. For him, montage is a fundamental technique for visualizing the destruction and construction of identities. The increasing mechanization and technologization of every sphere of life is giving rise to an altered body image. TOMAK’s self-portrayals reflect this civilizational development and speak of machine-men, an instrumentalized society, and humanity as a spare-parts warehouse.
  • Ines Valentinitsch
  • Ines Valentinitsch was born in Graz, studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna under Helmut Lang and has been running her own fashion design studio in Milan since 1998. As a student of Günter Brus, she was encouraged in her artistic drive and had never let go of painting. Freedom and liberation from external constraints led Ines Valentinitsch towards performance at an early age and form the centrepiece of her artistic expression.
  • Michael Kienzer
  • (*1962, Steyr, based in Vienna) 1979-1982 Kunstgewerbeschule Graz, Sculpture under Professor Josef Pillhofer. 1979-1982 Collaboration in the Art and Cultural Center Kreuzberg, Berlin. 1987-89 Stage designer at the Westphalian State Theater Castrop. 2004/05 Lectureship at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Multiple awards, international positions.
  • Hans Kupelwieser
  • *Born in 1948 in Lunz am See, lives and works in Vienna. The Austrian sculptor, graphic artist, and media artist Hans Kupelwieser is considered one of the most significant multimedia artists of his generation. His works range from photograms and sculptures to large-scale installations. To create them, he employs a wide variety of media and materials. The spectrum ranges from paper to metal, plastic, concrete, rubber, and glass. His working processes focus on expanding genre boundaries and exploring technical possibilities. Kupelwieser engages with theories of perception as well as architectural questions.
